From setting up energy communities to making them thrive. What tools are out there?

28 Apr 22

This event, organised by eight Horizon2020 projects working on the topic of energy communities, showcased 15 tools to help those who are setting up, managing, or growing their energy communities. These tools are perfect for engaged citizens, future and existing energy communities, policymakers, other projects or initiatives working in this field, and more.

The workshop organisers, EC², BECoop, DECIDE, eCREW, UP-STAIRS, COME RES, NEWCOMERS, W4RES and POWERPOOR, showcased in an interactive manner 18 tools available to people setting up, managing, growing energy communities: citizens, future and existing energy communities, policymakers, other projects and initiatives, RESCoops, etc.

The event clustered the tools in three groups to make sure stakeholders know to go when they have a need, based on which stage of developing a community energy initiative an actor is:

  • Inform yourself – Prior to starting a community energy initiative – understanding the basic concepts, researching and information collection
  • Test your market, your ideas, technologies – Organising and planning a community energy initiative – testing the market, which technologies to use, which business model and legal framework and how others have been doing
  • Lets act – get people involved and grow – Growing and improving an existing community initiative – Getting more people involved, engaging different social groups, data and energy sharing, one-stop shops.
